From 1960 To 2008



2008 - 4 May: Multiple nail laden pipe bombs exploded at a Federal Courthouse in San Diego at 1:40 AM causing "considerable damage" to the entrance and lobby and sending shrapnel two blocks away. The F.B.I. is investigating links between this attack and an April 25 explosion at the FedEx building also in San Diego.

2008 - April - 50 mink released from a fur farm in Jefferson, Oregon and breeding records destroyed. The Fur Commission USA claims all mink were recovered, but estimates the dollar loss for the destroyed breeding records was $5,000. Animal Liberation Front (ALF) claimed responsibility.

2008 - 6 March: A military recruiting station in Times Square was bombed in the early hours resulting in minor damage to the facility. It is believed a simply constructed device was used. Surveillance video that recorded the explosion also captured a bicycle riding man who prior to the blast stopped and walked up to the facility. Police are investigating a possible link between this attack and recent attacks on the Mexican and British consulates in New York.

2008 - 3 March: Four multi million-dollar show homes place in Woodinville, Washington are torched. The
Earth Liberation Front (ELF) is suspected in the fires.

2008 - 5 February: The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) plant an incendiary device at the front door of UCL researcher Edythe London's home in Los Angeles. The device charred the front door. Nobody was home at the time.

2007 - 5 November: Animal Liberation Front (ALF) activists claimed the liberation of over 100 hens from Shepherd's Egg Farm near Spanish Fork, Utah. They claimed there were several sheds containing tens of thousands of chickens, many of which were in bad conditions and that the hens were rehomed where they could go outside. The activists claim that around the world the ALF are making progress and dedicate the action to all animal liberation prisoners, including Barry Horne, who died six years ago today on a hunger strike.

2007 - 26 October: A pair of improvised explosive devices were thrown at the Mexican Consulate in New York City. The fake grenades were filled with black powder and detonated by fuses causing very minor damage. Police were investigating the connection between this and a similar attack against the British Consulate in New York in 2005.

2007 - 25 April: Failed Attack. A bomb was left in a women's clinic in Austin but failed to explode.

2006 - 11 September: Failed Attack. A man rammed his car into a women's clinic that he thought was an abortion clinic and set it ablaze in Davenport, Iowa causing $20,000 worth of damage to the building.

2006 - June: Failed Attack. The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) targets UCLA professor Lynn Fairbanks with a firebomb due to her research on animals. The bomb was placed on the doorstep of a house occupied by her neighbor and a tenant. According to the FBI, the device was lit but failed to ignite and was powerful enough to have killed the occupants.

2003 - 22 August: West Covina, CA. Vandalism and Destruction of Property by Earth Liberation Front (ELF)

2003 - 8>9 March: San Diego, CA. Arson by Earth Liberation Front (ELF).

2002 - 28 December: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ELF activists attacked a housing development, severely damaging construction vehicles and the model home on the property.

2002 - 26 November: Harborcreek, PA. Arson by Earth Liberation Front/Animal Liberation Front (ALF).

2002 - 1 November: Richmond, Virginia. Vandals who left messages crediting ELF damaged SUVs in several incidents recently. Twenty-five SUVs on the lot of a Ford dealer were permanently defaced with a glass-etching cream. A week later, SUVs parked near homes were severely damaged with an ax or hatchet.

2002 - October: Beltway Sniper Attacks: During three weeks in October 2002 John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo killed 10 people and critically injured three others in Washington D.C, Baltimore, and Virginia. An earlier spree by the pair had resulted in 3 deaths in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, California, Arizona, and Texas to bring the total to 16 deaths. No motivation was given at the trial but evidence presented showed an affinity to the cause of the Islamic Jihad.

2002 -28 September: Richmond, Virginia: 25 windows etched at 1 Burger King and 13 windows etched at each of 2 McDonalds. Claimed by ELF.

2002 - 15>16 September: Harborcreek, PA. Vandalism/Destruction of Property by Earth Liberation Front (ELF) / Animal Liberation Front (ALF)

2002 - 11 August: Irvine, Pennsylvania: A device, containing gasoline, was thrown onto the roof of the Northeast Research Station in the Allegheny National Forest. The ensuing fire caused nearly $700,000 in damages. An e-mail from ELF's office said "While innocent life will never be harmed in any action we undertake, where it is necessary, we will no longer hesitate to pick up the gun to implement justice, and provide the needed protection for our planet that decades of legal battles, pleading protest, and economic sabotage have failed so drastically to achieve." and that "all other US Forest Services administration and research facilities, as well as all Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) buildings nationwide should now be considered likely targets."

2002 2>10 August: Henrico and Goochland Counties, VA. Vandalism and Destruction of Property by Earth Liberation Front (ELF)

2002 - 4 July: Hesham Mohamed Hadayet, a 41-year-old Egyptian national, kills two Israelis and wounds four others at the El Al ticket counter at Los Angeles International Airport. The FBI concluded this was terrorism, although they found no evidence linking Hadayet to any terrorist group.

2002 - 11>12 May: Harborcreek, PA. Vandalism/Destruction of Property (200 mink released from Mindek mink farm) by Earth Liberation Front (ELF) /Animal Liberation Front (ALF)

2002 - May: Mailbox Pipe Bomber: Lucas John Helder rigged pipe bombs in private mailboxes to explode when the boxes were opened. He injured 6 people in Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Illinois, and Iowa. His motivation was to garner media attention so that he could spread a message denouncing government control over daily lives and the illegality of marijuana as well as promoting astral projection. 2001: The Center for Urban Horticulture at the University of Washington burned. Replacement building cost $7,000,000 Earth Liberation Front suspected.


2002 - 24 March: Erie, Pennsylvania: Hundreds of trees spiked in Wintergreen Gorge, crane, generators and pumps torched, other equipment monkey wrenched, $500,000 damages. Claimed by ELF.

2002 - 18 March: Erie, PA. Vandalism by Earth Liberation Front (ELF)

2002 - 26 January: St. Paul, Minnesota: University of Minnesota Microbial and Plant Genomics Research Center soil-testing lab and construction trailer burned down, construction equipment, including a bulldozer damaged, $630,000 damages. Claimed by ELF.

2001 - 22 December: Failed Attack. Richard Reid tackled by passengers in a plane traveling from Paris to Miami when he tried to light explosives concealed in his shoe.

2001 - 12 December: Failed Attack.
Jewish Defense League plot by Chairman Irv Rubin and follower Earl Krugel to blow up the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City, California and the office of Lebanese-American Congressman Darrell Issa foiled.

2001 - 18 September - November: Anthrax Attacks. Letters tainted with anthrax kill five across the United States, with politicians and media officials as the apparent targets. The case remains unsolved.

2001 - 11 September: September 11, 2001 Attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda. Islamic fundamentalists use airplanes to destroy the twin towers of the World Trade Center and heavily damage The Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed prematurely in Pennsylvania.

2000 - 29 December: Mount Sinai, New York: Three Long Island luxury homes under construction are set ablaze, and a fourth is spray-painted with graffiti: "If you build it we will burn it." The ELF issues a communiqué saying: "Recently, hundreds of houses have been built over much of Mount Sinai's picturesque landscape and developers now plan to build a further 189 luxury houses over the farms and forests adjacent to Island Estates...This hopefully provided a firm message that we will not tolerate the destruction of our island." Damages: $160,000.

2000 - 19 December: Miller Place, New York: A Long Island house under construction goes up in flames. "Building homes for the wealthy should not even be a priority," the ELF writes in its communiqué. "Forests, farms and wetlands are being replaced with a sea of houses, green chemical lawns, blacktop and roadkill." Damages: $50,000.

2000 - 9 December: 9, 2000; Middle Island, New York: Fire erupts in a Long Island condominium under construction. The ELF claims responsibility, saying the homes were "future dens of the wealthy elite." The group, announcing "an unbounded war on urban sprawl," claims it checked for occupants -- human and animal -- in 16 condos before setting incendiaries in them. Damages: $200,000.

2000 - 1 December: Phoenix, AZ. Multiple Arsons by Mark Warren Sands

2000 - 27 November: Niwot, Colorado. Arson hits one of the first luxury homes going up in a new subdivision. The ELF later sends a note, made of letters clipped from magazines, to the Boulder Weekly newspaper: "Viva la revolution! The Boulder ELF burned the Legend Ridge mansion on Nov. 27th." The underground group explains in a follow-up communiqué that the arson was driven by defeat of a statewide ballot measure to control growth. Damages: $2.5 million.

2000 - 18 October: Shoals, Indiana: Vandals find four pieces of heavy logging equipment in the Martin State Forest and cut hoses, slash seats, destroy gauges and pour sand in the engines, fuel tanks and radiators. They leave spray-painted graffiti including, "Earth Raper," "Go Cut in Hell," and "ELF." Damages: $55,000.

2000 - 9 September: Bloomington, Indiana: Fire erupts at the headquarters of the Monroe County Republican Party Committee headquarters. Investigators say a flammable liquid was poured on the building and ignited. The arson was a reminder, according to the ELF communiqué, that it would not sit quietly as politicians pushed for plans to extend Interstate 69. Damages: $1,500.

2000 - 20 July: Rhinelander, Wisconsin: Vandals hack down thousands of experimental trees, mostly poplars, and spray-paint vehicles at a U.S. Forest Service research station. The ELF claims the attack was against bioengineering, although researchers say the trees were bred naturally to grow faster and resist diseases. Damages: $1 million.

2000 - 30 April: Bloomington, Indiana: At least six pieces of logging and heavy construction equipment are sabotaged and a trailer full of wood chips is set ablaze at a road construction site just outside the city. A communiqué from the Earth Liberation Front states its plan was to punish those developing wooded areas around Bloomington, which "have turned what was once forested land into parking lots, luxury houses for rich scum and expanded roads." Damages: $75,000.

2000 - 24 March: Minneapolis, Highway 55 reroute, $500,000 in damages done to construction equipment.

2000 - 9 February: Saint Paul, Minnesota: University of Minnesota, ELF Crop Destruction, $1000+ damages.

2000 - 23 January: Bloomington, Indiana: Arson destroys a partially constructed luxury home. Investigators found message spray-painted in black on a sign near the house: "No Sprawl ELF." The ELF later issues a communiqué saying it torched the home because it was in the Lake Monroe Watershed, which provides drinking water to the city of Bloomington. Damages: $200,000.

1999 - 31 December: An arson fire causes one million dollars in damage and destroys the fourth floor of Michigan State University's Agriculture Hall . In 2008 four people that the government claimed were Earth Liberation Front members were indicted for that incident. ELF said the fire was set in response to the work being done to force developing nations in Asia, Latin America and Africa to switch from natural crop plants to genetically engineered sweet potatoes, corn, bananas and pineapples. Monsanto and USAID are major funders of the research and promotional work being done through Michigan State University. According to local newspapers, the fire caused some over $1 million in damage.

1999 - 25 December: Monmouth, Oregon Fire destroys the main office of the Boise Cascade logging company costing over $1 million. ELF claim responsibility in a communiqué.

1999 - 7 August: Escanaba, Michigan: Two fishing boats were set ablaze in the driveway of a veterinarian who once worked as a mink rancher. A garage door was tagged with graffiti 18 inches (460 mm) high: "FUR IS MURDER. E.L.F." The ELF later claims in an Internet posting it targeted the veterinarian after finding a "Fur is Enough" sign outside his home. Damages: $15,000

An Earth Liberation Front communiqué issued weeks later by the Liberation Collective in Portland, Oregon says the strike was payback to a company it accused of razing forests and killing wild animals for profit. Damages: $700,000.

1998 - 26 October: Powers, Michigan. Release of 5,000 mink at Tom Pipkorn's Mink Farm near Hermansville in the upper peninsula. An estimated 500 are run over on roads, starve, drown in a swimming pool or disappear. Damages: $100,000. ELF claim of responsibility faxed to Associated Press offices by North American Animal Liberation Front.

1998 - 19 October: Vail, Colorado. Fires ravage a portion of the Vail ski resort, seven structures destroyed: 4 ski lifts, a restaurant, a picnic facility, and a utility building. The Earth Liberation Front later claims it torched the resort because of proposed expansion into the declining habitat of lynx. Damages: $12 million.

1998 - 10 October: Rock Springs, Wyoming. Would-be saboteurs cut the locks off horse pens at a BLM corral, freeing about 40 wild horses. Failed incendiaries are found next to a pickup truck and a building. The Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front take joint responsibility. Damages: negligible.

1998 - 3 July: Middleton, Wisconsin. Break-in and release of 171 mink and ferrets from United Vaccines laboratory. Joint ALF / ELF claim.

1998 - 28 June: Boston, Massachusetts. Sprayed red paint on the Mexican Consulate in Boston to protest the treatment of peasants in Chiapas, Mexico. ELF claim without ALF.

1998 - 2 June: Olympia, Washington. Two U.S. Department of Agriculture wildlife stations, miles apart, go up in flames on the same morning. The Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front take joint responsibility for both of the attacks. Damages: $1.9 million.


1998 - 29 January: Birmingham, Ala. Bombing of Reproductive Services Clinic - Eric Robert Rudolph charged with the bombing on February 14, 1998.

1997 - 29 November: Hines, Oregon. Arsonists destroy a U.S. Bureau of Land Management horse barn, chutes, pens and equipment. Four hundred horses are released, but they are later recaptured. The Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front take joint responsibility. Damages: $474,000.

1997 - 21 July: Redmond, Oregon. Arson of Cavel West meat packing plant in Redmond. Estimated cost over $1 million. Joint ALF / ELF claim.

1997 - 14 March: Near Eugene, Oregon. Tree spiking at Robinson-Scott timber harvest site in the Mackenzie River watershed, Willamette National Forest. Joint ALF / ELF claim.

1997 - 24 February: An armed man opens fire on tourists at an observation deck atop the Empire State Building killing a Danish national and wounding visitors from the United States, Argentina, Switzerland and France before turning the gun on himself. A handwritten note carried by the gunman claims this was a punishment attack against the "enemies of Palestine". His widow claimed he became suicidal after losing $300,000 in a business venture. In a 2007 interview with the New York Daily News his daughter said her mother's story was a cover crafted by the Palestinian Authority and that her father wanted to punish the United States for its support of Israel

1996 - 30 October: Near Eugene, Oregon. Arson destroyed U.S. Forest Service Oakridge Ranger Station south of Eugene. Cost estimate, $5.3 million. Not officially recognized as an ELF arson; disgruntled law enforcement officers assert that a joint ALF / ELF claim was received but not published.

1996 - 28 October: Detroit, Oregon. A U.S. Forest Service pickup is torched on the parking lot of the Detroit Ranger District headquarters. The saboteurs tag the building with "Earth Liberation Front" and other graffiti. A plastic jug rigged as an incendiary device is later found on the roof. It did not go off. Damages: $15,000. Joint ALF / ELF claim.


1996 - 27 July: Centennial Olympic Park Bombing by Eric Robert Rudolph occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, during the Atlanta Olympics. One person was killed and 111 injured. In a statement released in 2005 Rudolph said the motive was to protest abortion and the "global socialist" Olympic Movement.

1995 - 24 April: Timber industry lobbyist, Gilbert P. Murray, is the third and final fatal victim of the Unabomber's mailbomb campaign.


1995 - 19 April: Oklahoma City Bombing: A truck bomb shattered the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, killing 168 people-including children playing in the building's day care center. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols launched the attack as part of the scheme of an anti-government militia.

1994 - 10 December: Advertising executive, Thomas J. Mosser, is killed after opening a mail package from the Unabomber, being the second fatality of the mailbomb campaign.

1988 - 12 April: Failed Attack. Yu Kikumura, a member of the Japanese Red Army, is arrested with three pipe bombs on the New Jersey Turnpike. According to prosecutors, Kikumura planned to bomb a military recruitment office in the Veteran's Administration building in lower Manhattan on April 14, the anniversary of the U.S. raid on Libya.


1985 - 11 December: computer rental store owner, Hugh Scrutton, is the first fatality of the Unabomber's neo-luddite campaign.

1985 - 11 October: Alex Odeh, a prominent Arab-American, was killed by a bomb in his office in Santa Ana, California. The case is unsolved, but it is thought the
Jewish Defense League was responsible.

1985 - April: Failed Attack. The FBI arrested several members of a Sikh terrorist group who were plotting to kill Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi when he visited New York in June.

1984 - 29 August > 10 October:
Rajneeshee Bioterror Attack. In what is believed to be the first incident of bioterrorism in the United States the Rajneeshee cult spreads salmonella in salad bars at 10 restaurants in The Dalles, Oregon, to influence a local election which backfired as suspicious residents came out in droves to prevent the election of Rajneeshee candidates. Health officials say that 751 people were sickened and more than 40 hospitalized. All but one of the establishments attacked went out of business. Investigators believed that similar attacks had previously been carried out in Salem, Portland and other cities in Oregon. .

1984 Failed Attack. According to Oregon law enforcement there was an abortive plot by the
Rajneeshee Cult to murder United States Attorney for Oregon, Charles Turner.

1983 - 7 November:
U.S. Senate Bombing. The Armed Resistance Unit, a militant leftist group, bombs the U.S. Capitol in response to the U.S. invasion of Grenada.

1982 - 31 December: FALN explodes bombs outside of the 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan, Federal Bureau of Investigation Headquarters and a United States courthouse in Brooklyn. Three New York Police Department police officers are blinded with one officer losing both eyes. All three officers sustained other serious injuries trying to diffuse a second Federal Plaza bomb.

1982 - 4 May: Turkish Honorary Consul Orhan Gunduz was assassinated in his car in Somerville, Massachusetts by the
Justice Commandos Against Armenian Genocide.

1982 - 28 January: Kemal Arikan, the Turkish Consul-General in Los Angeles, is killed by members of the
Justice Commandos Against Armenian Genocide.

1981 - 16 May: One was killed in an explosion in the toilets at the Pan Am terminal at New York's JFK airport. The bombing is claimed by the Puerto Rican Resistance Army.


1981 - 20 March: Michael Donald was randomly selected to be lynched by two Ku Klux Klan members near his Alabama home. He was beaten, had his throat slit, and was hung.

1980 - 22 July: Ali Akbar Tabatabai, an Iranian exile and critic of Ayatollah Khomeni, was shot in his Bethesda, Maryland home. Dawud Salahuddin, an American Muslim convert, was apparently paid by Iranians to kill Tabatabai.

1980 - 3 June: Bombing of the Statue of Liberty. At 7:30 p.m., a time delayed explosive device detonated in the Statue of Liberty's Story Room. Detonated after business hours, the bomb did not injure anyone, but cause $18,000 in damage, destroying many of the exhibits. The room was sealed off and left unrepaired until the Statue of Liberty restoration project that began years later. FBI investigators believed the perpetrators were Croatian terrorists seeking independence for Croatia from Yugoslavia, though no arrests were made.

1980 - 15 March: Armed members of
FALN raided the campaign headquarters of President Jimmy Carter in Chicago and the campaign headquarters of George H. W. Bush in New York City. Seven people in Chicago and ten people in New York were tied up as the offices were vandalized before the FALN members fled. A few days later, Carter delegates in Chicago received threatening letters from FALN.

1979 - 3 November: Members of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party fire on meeting of members of a Communist group who were trying to organize local African American workers in Greensboro, North Carolina, killing five.

1979 - 3 May:
FALN exploded a bomb outside of the Shubert Theatre in Chicago, injuring five people.

1977 - 3 August:
FALN bombs exploded on the twenty-first floor of 342 Madison Avenue in New York City, which housed United States Department of Defense security personnel, as well as the Mobil Building at 150 East Forty-Second Street, killing one. In addition the group warned that bombs were located in thirteen other buildings, including the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center resulting in the evacuation of one hundred thousand people. Five days later a bomb attributed to the group was found in the AMEX building.

1977 - 9 March: About a dozen Hanafi Muslims, led by Hamas Abdul Khaalis, took over the District Building (the city hall), the B'nai B'rith building, and the Islamic Center, in Washington, D.C. They were apparently seeking revenge for the murder of some of Khaalis' family. They held more than 130 hostages until the next day, killing a radio reporter and shooting and wounding then-councilman Marion Barry. The hostages were freed after negotiations, and the attackers were sent to prison.

1976 - 21 September: Orlando Letelier, a former member of the Chilean government, was killed by a car bomb in Washington, D.C. along with his assistant Ronni Moffitt. The killing was carried out by members of the Chilean
DINA.

1976 - 11 September: Croatian Freedom Fighters hijack a TWA airliner diverting it to Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, and then Paris demanding a manifesto be printed. One police officer was killed and three injured during an attempt to defuse a bomb that contained their communiques in a New York City train station locker.

1975 - 29 December: A bomb at New York's La Guardia Airport kills 11 and injures 75. The bombing remains unsolved.

1975 - 29 December: A bomb set off by
FALN in East Harlem, New York permanently disables a police officer while causing him to lose an eye.

1975 - 22 September: Failed Attack.
Sarah Jane Moore tries to assassinate President Gerald Ford outside of the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. The attempt fails when a bystander grabs her arm and deflects the shot. Moore has stated the motive was to create chaos to bring "the winds of change" because the government had declared war on the left wing.

1975 - 24 January: FALN, bombs Fraunces Tavern in New York City, killing four and injuring more than 50.

1974 - 6 August: Bomb at LAX ticketing area in Terminal 2 kills two and injures 17.

1974 - 13 June: The 29th floor of the Gulf Tower in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was bombed with dynamite. The bomb detonated at 9:41 p.m. and there were no injuries.
The Weather Underground took credit but no suspects have ever been identified.

1973: A New York City transit detective is killed and ten law enforcement personnel are shot four by machine gun during the year mostly in and around New York City by the
Black Liberation Army. Also two members of that organization are arrested with a car full of explosives. In the next few years there are a number of violent incidents involving this organization but they are more criminal in nature.

1973 - 1 June: The Israeli Air Force attache in Washington, D.C., Yosef Alon, was shot and killed outside his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Black September is possibly the culprit, though the case remains unsolved.

1973 - 6 March: Failed Attack. Explosives found in the trunks of cars were defused at the El Al air terminal at Kennedy Airport, the First Israel Bank and Trust Company, and the Israel Discount Bank, in New York City. Black September was believed responsible, and an Iraqi was arrested for the bombs in 1991.

1973 - 7 January: After shooting a police officer a week earlier
Mark Essex a former Black Panther party member shoots nineteen people, ten of them police officers, in retaliation for police killings in and around a Howard Johnsons hotel in New Orleans. He also set fires in the hotel before being killed by police.

1972 - 28 December: A Brooklyn, New York bartender is held for $12000 ransom by the
Black Liberation Army.

1972 : Failed Attack. Two
Jewish Defense League members were arrested and charged with bomb possession and burglary in a conspiracy to blow up the Long Island residence of the Soviet Mission to the United Nations.

1972 - 7 March: Failed Attack. 4.5 pounds of C-4 explosives found on a plane by New York City Police Bomb Squad.
1972 - 22 January: Two St. Louis policemen, Gregory Foster and Rocco Laurie, are shot in the back by at least three persons; four suspects in the case are members of the
Black Liberation Army; one suspect is later killed in a street battle with police; the recovered pistol matches Laurie's.

1971 - 1 March:
The Weathermen explode a bomb in the U.S. Capitol to protest the U.S. invasion of Laos.

1971:
Jewish Defense League linked to a detonation outside of Soviet cultural offices in Washington and rifle fire into the Soviet mission to the United Nations.

1971: During this year the
Black Liberation Army is suspected of killing three policemen one at his desk in San Francisco, shooting four others and opening fire on three patrol cars and rolling a grenade which heavily damages a police car and injures two officers. An attempt is made to bomb a police station. These incidents happen in various cities around the country. In August the group runs a one month long guerrilla warfare school in Fayetteville, Georgia. Seven are arrested in January 2007 in connection with the San Francisco desk shooting incident.

1970:
Jewish Defense League linked with a bomb explosion outside of Aeroflot's New York City office in protest of treatment of Soviet Jews.

1970 - 21 November: Bombing of the City Hall of Portland, Oregon in an attempt to destroy the state's bronze Liberty Bell replica. The late night explosion destroyed the display foyer, blew out the building doors, damaged the council hall, and blew out windows more than a block away. The night janitor was injured in the blast. The crime remains unsolved, though a number of local anti-war and radical groups of the era remain the primary suspects.

1970 - 22 October: An antipersonnel time bomb explodes outside a San Francisco church, showering steel shrapnel on mourners of a patrolman slain in a bank holdup; no one is injured. The
Black Liberation Army is suspected.

1970 - 24 August:
Sterling Hall Bombing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Wisconsin in protest of the Army Mathematics Research Center and the Vietnam War, which unintentionally killed one. The bombers exploded the device in the middle of the night in the mistaken belief nobody would be there.

1970 - 6 March: Failed Attack. Three members of the
Weather Underground are killed when their “bomb factory” located in New York’s Greenwich Village accidentally explodes. WUO members Theodore Gold, Diana Oughton, and Terry Robbins die in this accident. The bomb was intended to be planted at a non-commissioned officer's dance at Fort Dix, New Jersey. The bomb was packed with nails to inflict maximum casualties upon detonation. See Greenwich Village Townhouse Explosion.

1969 - 14 October: The
Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (FALN), a Puerto Rican nationalist group, claims responsibility for a small bomb explosion at Macy's Herald Square.

1969 - 7 October: Fifth floor of the Armed Forces Induction Center in New York City devastated by explosion.

1969 - 8 August: United States Department of Commerce Offices in New York City damaged by bombing

1969 - 7 August: Twenty injured in New York Marine Midland Building bombing.

1968 - 23-30 April: During a student rebellion at New York's Columbia University members of the Students for a Democratic Society and Student Afro-American Society held a dean hostage demanding an end to both military research on campus and construction of a gymnasium in nearby Harlem.

1966 - 10 January: Vernon Dahmer dies in the firebombing of his own home in Mississippi at the hands of the
Ku Klux Klan

1965 - 25 March: The
Ku Klux Klan murders Viola Liuzzo, a Southern-raised white mother of five who was visiting Alabama from her home in Detroit to attend a civil rights march. At the time of her murder Liuzzo was transporting Civil Rights Marchers.

1965: Failed Attack. The Monumental Plot - New York Police thwart an attempt to dynamite the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, and the Washington Monument by three members of the pro-Castro Black Liberation Front and a Quebec Separatist.

1964 - 21 June: In the
Mississippi Civil Rights Worker Murders, three civil rights workers are murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi by the Ku Klux Klan.

1963 - 16 September:
16th Street Baptist Church Bombing. A member of the Ku Klux Klan bombed a Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four girls.

1963 - 12 June: NAACP organizer Medgar Evers shot in front of his Mississippi home by member of the
Ku Klux Klan.

1960: Sunday Bomber sets off a series of bombs in New York City subways and ferries during Sundays and Holidays. The incidents receive "breathless" media coverage.

The majority of attacks have been carried out by Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, or ETA, an armed Basque Separatist movement in Spain.





2008 - 10 June: Madrid/Barcelona, Spain - Failed attack by Al Qaeda

2008 - 8 June: A bomb detonated at the presses of El Correo near the port city of Bilbao at about 3 a.m damaging the printing facilities of the Basque newspaper as people worked inside, but no one was reported injured. While ETA have not yet laid claim to this attack, it is rumored to be the doing of ETA.

2008 - 1 June: Following a warning call, at around 2:30 am early Sunday morning, a blast occurred outside the headquarters of a construction company, Construcciones Amenabar, in the town of Zarautz. There were casualties, though two people suffered ear damage from the noise of the explosion. ETA.

2008 - 19 May: At 00:50 CET, a bomb placed in a van exploded in front of the Real Club Marítimo in the neighborhood of Las Arenas - Areeta in Getxo, Biscay, usual meeting point of businessmen and politicians, causing no human losses. A call to the Basque road emergency service, DYA, one hour before had alerted of the forthcoming explosion. ETA.

2008 - 14 May: A bomb placed in a van exploded at 3am outside the Civil Guard barracks at Legutiano, Álava, killing one policeman, Juan Manuel Piñuel Villalón, and injuring four. On May 30, ETA claimed responsibility.

2008 - 12 May: Two small bombs have damaged construction equipment in an attack claimed by the Basque separatist group. Basque Interior Ministry says in a statement that the bombs targeted bulldozers at a construction site in Hernani, near Donostia-San Sebastian, but no one was hurt. ETA admitted responsibility for a bomb attack on a construction site for the region's new AVE high-speed train network.

2008 - 1 May: Three bombs blamed by police on Basque separatist group ETA exploded early Thursday in northern Spain's Basque region, causing damage but no reports of casualties. The bombs are rumored to be a response to the arrest and jailing of ANV mayor Inocencia Galparsoro, the Mayor of Mondragón. The first -- and largest -- explosion in an industrial pavilion for Spain's Ministry of Labor in the Basque town of Arrigorriaga. The other two bombs exploded half an hour later near a Basque regional government labor institute in the large Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastian. These two were preceded by warning calls, thus causing little damage, according to the spokesman.

2008 - 19 April: For the second time in three days, a bomb went off in northern Spain Sunday preceded by a warning call by the Basque separatist group ETA. The blast damaged the recreation center of the ruling Socialist Party in the Basque town of Elgoibar. No one was hurt.

2008 - 17 April: A bomb blast outside the office of Spain's ruling Socialist party in Bilbao, was blamed on Basque separatist group ETA after a traditional phone call to DYA, and caused serious damage to the building but no casualties. However, 7 policemen were injured.

2008 - 30 March: Two small bombs exploded near Azpeitia with minor damage near a television transmitter. No injuries were reported. ETA.

2008 - 21 March: A car bomb explodes outside a Guardia Civil barracks in Calahorra, Rioja, injuring one policeman lightly and causing extensive property damage. ETA.

2008 - 7 March: An ETA gunman kills Isaías Carrasco, former town councilor for Mondragón, on his way to work, two days before the General Elections.

2007 - 1 December: Three gunmen kill one Spanish civil guard and mortally wounded another (who died 4 days later) in Capbreton, France. The gunmen escaped in a car, later commandeering a second in their getaway. ETA.

2007 - 9 September: Huge ETA car bomb fails to go off outside regional Defense ministry in Logroño.

2007 - 2 September: An small bomb explodes in Fuenmayor, La Rioja, no injuries. ETA.

2007 - 25 August: ETA kidnaps a family and steals their Camper Van. Later, they carried the Van with explosives and detonated it in an olive grove near Castellon after being faced with the police. ETA had been planning to use the explosives for imminent attacks. The family was freed some days later.

2007 - 24 August: A van bomb explodes in front of Civil Guard's cuartel in Durango, injuring two Guardia Civil officers. Another car bomb, supposed to be the one used to run away, explodes minutes later in Amorebieta. ETA.

2007 - 25 July: Two small bombs, claimed to be from ETA, exploded along the Tour de France route in Spain, there were no injuries reported.

2007 - 10 July: A suspected ETA member is arrested at the bus station in Santander, Spain armed with a gun, fake ID, bomb components and plans of at least two targets including the ferry terminal connecting Santander to Plymouth. Some media reported the Santander-Plymouth ferry was the target, although according to the The Plymouth Evening Herald, this was not the case.

2007 - 30 June: An apparently hoaxed ETA bomb threat calls in to Basque newspaper Gara leads to the evacuation of the Ibiza airport. Police find two suspicious items in the airport car park: a shoe box and a backpack. A bomb-investigating robot found the shoe box to be empty; the backpack was destroyed by controlled explosion.

2007 - 26 June: Barcelona, Spain Failed attack by Al Qaeda

2007 - 5 June: ETA announces that the ceasefire is over.

2007 - 28 May: Barcelona, Spain Threat by Al Qaeda

2006 - 30 December: A bomb attack at terminal T4 of Madrid Barajas airport. Two Ecuadorian immigrants (Diego Armando Estacio Civizapa and Carlos Alonso Palate), who were napping inside their cars in the parking garage die as a consequence of the explosion. ETA.

2006 - April: The Sidi Bel Abbas sanctuary arson occurred in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. This structure, built to commemorate 12th-century Muslim saint Sidi Bel Abbas, was burned by unknown parties. This action was widely believed to have been committed as an anti-Muslim act, particularly as several other attacks on Muslim religious centers in Spain occurred in 2005-2006. However, others have hypothesized that the sanctuary was burned by Salafist elements, who doctrinally object to the veneration of any human.

2006 - 22 March: ETA declares a "permanent ceasefire" after nearly 40 years fighting for independence from Spanish and French authorities. "Euskadi Ta Askatasuna has decided to declare a permanent ceasefire as of 0000 (2300 GMT) on 24 March 2006".

2006 - 5 March: Following the February 2006 deaths of ETA members Igor Miguel Angulo Iturrate, aged 32 (due to an apparent suicide by hanging), and Ricardo Sainz Olmos, aged 41 (as a result of an apparent heart attack), Batasuna together with the union Langile Abertzaleen Batzordeak call a day of protest and general strike on March 9. On the morning of the strike, ETA detonates several bombs near highways, causing no injuries.

2006 - 14 February: A car bomb exploded at a discotheque in northern Spain causing damage but no injuries because police had cleared the area after a traditional warning call in the name of the Basque separatist group ETA.

2006 - 6 February: Zaragoza, Spain Handgun by First of October Antifascist Resistance Group (GRAPO)

2006 - 26 January: ETA detonated a bomb beside the court of justice of Balmaseda and another one in the premises of Correos postal service in Etxebarri, both in Biscay, causing material damages and no personal injuries.

2005 - 21 December: ETA detonated a bomb inside a van in the back alley of a nightclub in Santesteban, Navarre. No injuries were reported. The nightclub suffered extensive structural damages and some buildings around it suffered damages too.

2005 - 18 December: ETA detonated a bomb inside an eel cannery in Irura, Guipúzcoa. No injuries were reported although the cannery suffered extensive damage. The police reports that the bombing is part of an extensive extortion campaign of ETA to Basque business owners.

2005 - 6 December: On Spanish Constitution Day, ETA detonated five bombs along Madrid highways. No injuries were reported. Also, in northern Spain, Santander Airport was closed following a threat of an attack using grenade launchers.

2005 - 24 September: ETA suspected of a car bomb attack in the northern Spanish province of Avila.

2005 - 27 February: A small bomb exploded at a resort hotel in Villajoyosa after a telephoned warning. The building was evacuated and no one was injured. The explosion damaged only a small house near the residence's swimming pool. ETA.

2005 - 9 February: ETA blows a white Renault 19 car with 30 kg of cloratite. The car was placed to the side of the building of Steria Iberica, in Madrid. A total of 42 people resulted with minor injuries.

2004 - 12 December: The Real Madrid Santiago Bernabéu stadium football Stadium was evacuated due to a phone-in bomb threat on behalf of ETA. The bomb—expected to blow up at 9:00 p.m.—does not explode, and the 69,000 spectators of the match are safely evacuated by the Spanish Police at 8:45 p.m.

2004 - 6 December: On Spanish Constitution Day, ETA detonated seven bombs in bars, cafes and town squares across Spain.

2004 - 3 December: ETA bombs 5 petrol stations in the Madrid area. Due to a telephoned warning, the areas were evacuated and no one was injured.

2004 - 27 September: Almeria, Spain Threat by Suicide Brigades of Andalucía

2004 - 27 September: ETA militants send a videotape to Gara, a Basque newspaper based in Gipuzkoa, in which the militants state that ETA would continue to fight for Basque self-determination and that ETA would "respond with arms against those who deny us through the force of arms." This videotape represented ETA's first major public statement since the 11 March attacks. During the weekend preceding the videotape release, the group claimed responsibility for a series of bombings that had hampered electricity transmission between France and Spain.

2004 - 2 April: Madrid, Spain Failed attack by Al Qaeda

2004 - 11 March: Madrid Train Bombings (also known as 11/3 and in Spanish as 11-M) consisted of a series of coordinated bombings against the Cercanías (commuter train) system of Madrid, Spain on the morning of 11 March 2004 (three days before Spain's general elections), killing 191 people and wounding 1,755. The official investigation by the Spanish Judiciary determined the attacks were directed by an al-Qaeda-inspired terrorist cell although no direct al-Qaeda participation (only "inspiration") has been established. Spanish nationals who sold the explosives to the terrorists were also arrested.

2003 - 24 December: ETA attempts to blow 50 kg of explosives inside Madrid's busy Chamartín Station at 3:55 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The police thwarted the attempt when they stopped Garikoitz Arruarte trying to load 28 kg of explosives into a Madrid-bound train in San Sebastián. Another bomb with over 20 kg of explosives was then found inside a second train passing near Burgos, already several hundred kilometers on its way to Madrid.

2003 - 30 May: A car bomb in Navarre kills two policemen and wounds a civilian. ETA.

2002 - 22 December: Ibon Fernandez Iradi, who is suspected of teaching ETA members how to manufacture IEDs, escapes from custody in a police station in Bayonne.

2002 - 4 August: Car bomb explodes outside the Civil Guard's casa cuartel in Santa Pola and kills two people, a six-year-old girl and a 54 year old man, and injuring 40 people. ETA.

2001 - 16 October: Catalan, Spain Failed attack by Italian Anarchist Black Cross

2001 - 2 September: A home-made bomb explodes at 9 a.m. in Vitoria in an electronics store owned by an officer of the Ertzaintza regional police force. The bomb damages cars but causes no personal injuries. ETA.

2001 - 27 August: Days after a series of raids, ETA warns the authorities about a bomb they set to explode at around 8 a.m. in Madrid Barajas Airport. The 40 to 50 kg of explosives placed inside a stolen car explode on the second floor of Terminal 2 (national flights) car park, causing only material damage.

2001 - 27 July: Three people were injured at 2:30 a.m. when a powerful explosion occurred in front of the La Caixa bank in downtown Madrid. In the same day, Spanish authorities deactivated what was described as a "massive" car bomb in an airport in Malaga, a major tourist destination. An ETA caller warned ahead of time that the bomb was set.

2001 - 26 July: Barcelona, Spain Package bomb by First of October Antifascist Resistance Group (GRAPO)

2001 - 14 July: Twin attacks by ETA claim the lives of two within hours of each other. Jose Javier Múgica, 50, a regional councilor and member of the center-right Union of the People of Navarra party, dies after a car bomb is placed in his van in the northern village of Leiza; Mikel Uribe, 44, a police officer from the General Inspection Unit (Internal Affairs) of the Ertzaintza, dies after being shot from behind in his car in the town of Leaburu. CNN reports that hundreds of Spaniards have gathered in city and town halls around Spain to silently protest two killings blamed on the "Basque terrorist group ETA". The cities include Pamplona, Vitoria and Zaragoza.

2001 - 10 July: Luis Ortiz de la Rosa, 33, a police officer, is killed at 8:30 p.m. in a southern neighborhood in Madrid when a car bomb explodes. The blast also injures twelve. A call from ETA 45 minutes before had been made, and police were clearing the area when the bomb detonated.

2001 - 24 May: Santiago Oleaga Elejabarrieta, 54, the chief financial officer of El Diario Vasco (The Basque Daily), the most widely circulated newspaper in Guipúzcoa, dies instantly after being shot in the head. The attack was likely motivated by the anti-ETA editorials of 'El Diario. Thousands of Spaniards participate in a silent march through San Sebastian to protest the killing of journalist Santiago Oleaga Elejabarrieta. Banners are held that read "No to ETA – Peace And Freedom." Spanish reporters release a statement with the words "However much they kill and try to impose their cause through terror we, as media professionals, will defend the freedom of expression that took so long to achieve in this country."

2001 - 12 May: Thirteen people are injured when a car bomb explodes in Madrid days before regional elections in the Basque County. Eight minutes before the bomb exploded, an anonymous ETA caller warned authorities.

2000 - 31 December: Seville, Spain Car bomb by an unknown group

2000 - 18 December: A bomb is placed inside an elevator of the Faculty of Journalism of the University of the Basque Country in Lejona (Vizcaya). The bomb was detected in time by Prof. Edurne Uriarte's bodyguard, and then deactivated. ETA.

2000 - 27 September: Seville, Valencia and Vigo, Spain. Package bomb

1999 - 21/22 December: The Spanish Civil Guard intercepts a Madrid-bound van driven by ETA members and loaded with 950 kg of explosives near Calatayud (Zaragoza); the next day, another van loaded with 750 kg is found not far from there. The incident is known as "la caravana de la muerte" (the caravan of death). 1997: Abduction of Basque councilor Miguel Angel Blanco, prompting six million Spaniards to join mass demonstrations against ETA. The organization asks the government to relocate all imprisoned ETA members in prisons closer to the Basque Country in 48 hours. When the government does not accept this demand, Miguel Angel Blanco is executed.

1995 - 11 December: A car bomb explodes at the passing of military van in the Vallecas borough of Madrid, killing 6 civilians who worked for the Army. ETA.

1995 - 19 April: Nearly successful attempt to kill José María Aznar, the leader of Spain's right-wing opposition and future Prime Minister. A car bomb loaded with 40 kg of explosives is detonated at the passing of his official car. He is saved by his vehicle's armor plating but a bystander is killed in the blast. ETA.

1995: Assassination plot on King Juan Carlos of Spain failed. ETA.

1993 - 21 June: A car bomb explodes at the passing of a military van at the junction of López de Hoyos and Joaquín Costa streets in Madrid, killing 6 soldiers and 1 civilian and injuring 20 people. ETA.

1991 - 29 May: A car bomb loaded with 70 kg of explosives is detonated inside the Civil Guard's Casa Cuartel in Vic (Barcelona), which was located next to a school. 10 people are killed (4 of them children) and 28 are injured. ETA.

1987 - 26 December: Barcelona, Spain Incendiary bomb small

1987 - 11 December: 250 kg of explosives inside a car bomb explode next to the Civil Guard's Casa Cuartel in Zaragoza, killing 11 people and injuring 40. ETA.

1987 - 19 June: A car bomb explodes in the underground car park of an Hipercor supermarket in Barcelona, killing 21 civilians and injuring 45, amongst them several small children. ETA.

1987 - 15 April: Madrid, Spain Mortar by Japanese Red Army (JRA)

1986 - 14 July: A car bomb on República Dominicana square in Madrid explodes at the passing of a small bus carrying young Civil Guards, killing 12 of them and injuring 50 people. ETA.

1985 - September: First ETA car bomb in Madrid kills an American citizen and wounds 16 Civil Guards.

1985 - July (day unknown): Madrid, Spain Package bomb by Abu Nidal Organization (ANO)

1977 - 27 March: CIIM terrorists bombed a florist shop in Las Palmas Airport, seriously injuring eight people. Members then threatened to explode a second bomb in the airport, forcing police to shut down air traffic while they searched for the bomb. The sudden re-routing of all flights to the Los Rodeos Airport, in addition to various other factors, was blamed for Los Rodeos disaster, the airplane crash with the highest number of fatalities to date, when two Boeing 747 airliners collided resulting in the death of 583 people.

1977 - 24 January: The 1977 Massacre of Atocha was a neo-fascist attack during the Spanish transition to democracy after Franco's death in 1975, killing five and injuring four. It was committed in an office located on 77 Atocha Street near Atocha railway station in Madrid, where specialists of labor law, members of the Workers' Commissions trade union (CCOO), and of the then clandestine Communist Party of Spain (PCE), had gathered. The next day, the massacre was revindicated by a group calling itself Alianza Apostólica Anticomunista (Triple A or AAA). The suspects arrested were close to Blas Piñar's Fuerza Nueva far-right party, the Falange-JONS and the Franco Guard.

1977 - 3 January: CIIM bombed the offices of South African Airways in Las Palmas, its first attack.

1974 - 13 September: A bomb is placed inside the "Rolando" cafeteria in Madrid, killing 12 civilians. ETA.

1973 - 20 December: Prime Minister Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco is assassinated in Madrid in retaliation for the government's execution of Basque separatists. ETA.

1968: Melitón Manzanas, a secret police chief in the Basque city of San Sebastian, is killed in ETA's first deadly attack.

1961: First ETA attack, an unsuccessful attempt to derail a train.
